The other night I had dinner with a great group of women photographers and one in particular, Tess Kefalonitis had these words of wisdom to share: "Speak your heart". So here I am, opening my heart to yours. In all my life I don't think I've had a more intimate relationship or such closeness as I've had with my two daughters when we were nursing. That bond has carried forward even though now that chapter for us has closed. The smell of their heads, the tucking of their warm baby-scented bodies into mine, the curl of our fingers touching, the gulp, gulp, gulp, so resolute and earnest are something I miss. It was earned, so hard-earned and I was determined that this was the way for us. We weren't always met with approval and I had a physical limitation that made latching a little difficult for my first daughter. It was sometimes hard for those around us to understand why we nursed for so long. And weaning for us was a simple, "I think we are done." No struggle. We were both ready to move on. That was the way for us. And I want all new moms to know that if this is the path you choose it's not a lonely one. It's a gorgeous path with vistas as far as the eye can see (and a little poison oak too). And when you get to the top you'll know it's so much more than a mere accomplishment. It's life and love and it was what was meant to be.
